Coffee table by Louis Van Teeffelen for Webe 1960s reversible table top
Organically designed teak coffee table by renowned Dutch designer Louis van Teeffelen (1921-1972). Van Teeffelen took the evening course in furniture design and technical manufacturing at the Royal PBNA (Polytechnisch Bureau Nederland Arnhem). After working at two smaller furniture manufacturers in Gelderland, he became the head designer at Walraven and Bevers from 1955 to 1967. This well-known furniture factory had been established in 1938 and initially bore the name of its founders, but later became known as Wébé. Van Teeffelen had a recognisable style all his own. He was inspired by Scandinavian design and designed high-quality, (mostly teak) wooden furniture with organic shapes for Wébé. This table from the 1960s is typical of his style. The table top is reversible: one side is teak veneer and the other is imitation teak, i.e. formica. The table top of this table has some signs of use, appropriate to its age. The table is not marked.
