Henriëtte Ronner-Knip biscuit tin with cats Antique
Are you a real cat lover? Then this biscuit tin should not be missing in your home!
This cookie tin, which can also be used as a storage bin, features images of paintings by Dutch artist Henriëtte Ronner-Knip (1821-1909), who specialised in romantic animal paintings. She is best known as a cat painter: from 1870 onwards, she mainly painted cats in salons. In doing so, she managed to capture the different characters, emotions and body positions of the cats and the specific cat look so well that her cat paintings soon became popular with a large audience. Often the cats played in beautifully decorated rooms among thick rugs, antique furniture and other objects, making the paintings rather accessory still lifes with cats. Although Ronner-Knip's work had long been loved by a wide audience, for a long time art historians did not know what to do with the cute cat scenes. That changed in the late 1990s thanks to an exhibition at the Kunsthal in Rotterdam. Since then, Ronner-Knip's paintings have been sought after at auctions and can be found in several museums, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
This tin features three cat paintings. The lid shows four cats playing with a Persian carpet and a sleeping kitten. Both wide sides show a mother cat with her three kittens near a sewing box. One kitten clambers on a chair, while mother cat watches her other two kittens play with the sewing box. On the two narrow sides, a mother cat with two kittens lies on a green cushion, while the third kitten walks by.
This tin would also make an original gift.
